If you have not tasted Australian Chardonnay in the last couple of years then you are missing out as the style has gone through a major change and I for one think .. for the better!
Gone are the big, fat, buttery overly oaked and oily styles of Chardonnay that we all consumed during the 80’s and 90’s and even early 00’s. We are now spoilt for choice and most producers are far more willing to experiment with the variety and allow the fruit to be the focal point of the wine with oak playing a secondary role of support.
Wild/natural yeast’s are now an integral component in producing wines that are textural, linear and complex.
I am loving the wide slection of tight, minerally, grapefruit and melon Chardonnay’s that are currently on the market at extraordinary prices!
Whilst i am still a massive fan of Chablis – There is a glimpse of some of the cooler regions of Australia closing in on the ‘style’.
Re-discover one of Australia’s best varietal wines and considering it has now overtaken Shiraz as the most prolific variety there is plenty to share around!.
My wish list of Chardonnay’s to come – stand by!
Cheers
