Pio Cesare Grignolino del Monferrato 2008 was a very pleasant surprise. I expected something light, a little bit juicy, perhaps Dolcetto-like but as all the old books tell you, Grignolino will be light but is often tannic (from the many pips) and also quite acidic. This combination didn’t altogether appeal. But in the spirit of nothing ventured, nothing gained I boldly pulled the cork, poured a tasting measure , sniffed, sipped and swilled. Waiting, waiting, waiting, still no tannic hit, no big acid, just juicy and light, raspberry, cherry, earthy and slighty herby. Acid all in balance. Faint tannins present. Very pleasant indeed. I couldn’t smell the ‘alpine scent’ described by Jancis but I’m not quite sure what that is. Recommended for light drinking now but whatever you do don’t leave it for long. Its freshness (which is what this wine is all about) is just holding on, but only by one hand.
